TITLE: Entering data PRODUCT: 123 Release 4 for Windows CHAPTER: 07-Entering and Editing Data BOOK: User's Guide DATE: 01/01/94 FAX NUMBER: 10563 You build a spreadsheet by entering data, such as numbers, text, dates, and times. You can edit data, copy it, and move it. You can also enter and edit data by inserting and deleting columns, rows, and ranges. After entering data, you can find and replace text, and check spelling. This chapter describes techniques for entering, editing, and checking data. Entering data You can enter numbers, text, dates, times, formulas, and @functions. As you enter data, it appears in both the contents box and the current cell. Click in the contents box to enter data there, or select a cell to enter data directly in the cell. The insertion point, a | (vertical bar), appears where you're entering the data. [ILLU] When you enter data in the contents box, the box expands to the right until it reaches the edge of the window. Then it expands downward to display more characters up to a limit of 512. When you enter and edit data directly in a cell, the cell expands to the right until it reaches the edge of the window and then begins to scroll. While you're entering data, 1-2-3 displays the Cancel and Confirm buttons in the edit line. [ILLU] You can click these buttons to cancel or confirm an entry. You can also confirm an entry by clicking another cell, or by pressing enter, or UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT or the other pointer-movement keys. When you click the Confirm button or press ENTER in a single-cell range, the cell pointer stays in the cell where you entered the data. When you press UP, DOWN, RIGHT, or LEFT, the cell pointer moves one cell in the direction of the arrow. When you enter data in a multiple-cell range or in a collection, pressing ENTER moves the cell pointer to the next cell in the current range. If your entry is valid, 1-2-3 enters it in the cell, and the mode indicator changes to Ready. If your entry isn't valid, 1-2-3 beeps and places the insertion point where you made an error. The cell contents remain in the contents box or the cell until you correct or cancel the entry. To cancel an entry, click the Cancel button or press esc. (C) Copyright Lotus Development, 1995.
